  • process:

We used cameras, video cameras and phones to record every meetings and testings of our group. When I began to make the documentary, I sorted out all the clips and put them into different folds which can help me use them efficiently.  I would like to use this documentary to show our animation, our sound and our interaction part, and each members of our group. Beside, the documentary is divided into five parts: why did we do it? who we are? how did we present?

  • Inspiration Ideas:

The project is named Environment in (e)motion, the environment be provided with us is located in the Sculpture Court in the Edinburgh College of Art.

There are a number of valuable sculpture collection in the Sculpture Court, because of the long history and the inappropriate protection of the sculptures (some were used inappropriately by teaching activities), some sculptures were damaged by more or less.

So we thought this topic ‘recovery’, a journey of recovery.

The word recovery itself is very abstract.

First we need to recovery what?

It is the wound on body need to be cured. It is the wounded heart need to be cured. It is the ordinary people who experienced suffering need to be cured. At the same time, you and me also need to be cured although we haven’t suffer from illness or sadness. But we still need a relief from the busy life and get a total recovery from the daily life. Maybe this is a journey to find who you are or find the truth of myself.

In this project, we want to recovery these Victorian time sculptures.

After listening to the introduction from curator of Sculpture Court, we learned about the stories behind these sculptures. Most of sculptures embrace a lively and vivid story. Although they just stand there without a word, they express their stories through silence. But in this project, we want to use forms of animation and interaction to inspire visitors to listen their stories (sculptures stories).

In the traditional Chinese culture, the highest excellence is like that of water. The excellence of water appears in its benefiting all things, and in its occupying, without striving, the low place which all men dislike. Hence it is near to the Tao. ( wenda.tianya.cn/question/60fad2631da93cb6 )

Water gives birth to the life and the life originates from water. We chose the oceans (water) as our theme to awaken these sleeping lives in our project.

  • Function and Intention:

In this project, I was responsible for the animation part, including designing animation plots, drawing animation sketch and write the storyline of the whole animation.

In the original plan (Submission One), we planned to use only one large projector to project the animation of the main wall an and The Winged Victory of Samothrace. But later, we changed the idea because of technological problems, so our animation was divided into three parts, the first part and also the largest part is the main wall part, the second part is Guals and the third part is Venus de’ Medici part.

Thanks to the clear arrangement of work, our group can finish our personal job effectively.

Overall Storyline of the Animation Part:

  • main part – (using a big projector on the 2nd floor and the other projector on the ground floor)

  • Venus de’ Medici part: (using a small projector)
  1. The organs of the body exposed, revealing the internal organs
  2. then be cured
  3. Healing Body
  4. The light emittingee
    • Methodology of the animation of background wall

Firstly, I designed a storyline of overall animation and began to make my own part. After discussing with group members, we decided to use After Effects and mad mapper to achieve our animations. To be frankly, each member of group have no background in After Effects before, so everyone need to learn it from zero.

I looked a series basic After Effects tutorials online and try to make the first part of the animation.  I used  Photoshop to edit original material and then loaded them into After Effects to do animation, finally used Adobe Premier and iMovie to do some editing work.

cloudThe is a screenshot a online video I searched for projection mapping before. And I tried to achieve a similar effects in our presentation show.

cloud I used a lot of effects to make the animation, such as Fractal Noise effect, Particle World Effect, CC Color Offset, Color Correction. edit I divided my animation into 8 parts, including the cloud, the raining, the lighting, the sky and sea, sea, sea2 and plant in the sea. I made the eight parts in AE and them used Premier and imoive to edit.

Here is the first part of the animation: cloud.

Here is the last part of my animation: plant in the sea. I used AI do design the originally pattern and edited them in Photoshop. To achieve the the feeling of plant growth in the water, I used Distort effects( CC Rripple Pulse, Displacement Map, Liquify, Ripple, Turbulent Displace)to make it.

flower

At the originally design, I haven’t use a lot of  Distort effects to make this part. But after discussing with our supervisor, Rocio advised me to make this part more relevant into our overall theme and suggested me to make plant waving in the water irregularly. So I made some changes to the animation. Although only some minor changes were made to this part, the overall effect of the show becomes more coherent.

Here is the animation of plant in the sea.

And these two pictures showed the presentation day situation.

And this is the live performance.

  • Project Appraisal

Overall, our performance achieved a good effects and even myself also was influenced by the atmosphere. Animations, sounds and interaction, the three part cooperate with each other nearly perfectly. Some audience shared their feelings with us and set a high value on our performance. However, we all know that there are still a lot of improvements we can do.

We use two parts to tell our story. But it is a little bit confusing for audience to understand our story. The four part animations are not such coherent and the location of interaction part  is quite unfriendly for visitors to attend (in the east corner of Sculpture Court).  Although we arranged two lying chairs in the middle of Sculpture Court, there are too many people come here ( the numbers of visitors exceeded our expectation) and it is quite crowd to find a place to stand. So it is impossible to sit in chairs.

However, I am still proud of my group members. Because during this project everyone put efforts in it and we all enjoy doing a team work together, we like to share opinions give a help to each other.  It is not just a show.

  •  Documentary

In addition to the making of animation part, I was also responsible for the documentary shooting, editing and producing.

Members: Ye Tian (Terry) & Zheng Wang (Shana) & Bei Ye (Suzie) & Ke Niu (Hazel) & Yuan Lu (Lynn) & Ao Shen (Dora)

Key Word: Presentation Day Testing 1

Overview: In this session, it is the first time for everyone to settle equipments and test their parts, including separate animations and the sound part.

Preparation stage

testing222

The first testing part is the interactive part.

Explain: users can walk thought this space and shake their hands or body or make some gestures and the water scene will change its shapes.

interaction1

The second testing part is the animation part.

The pictures below show the Niukes’ animation about Gaulois. It was a little bit complex to project the animation precisely on this sculpture so we spent nearly 2 hours to test this part.

duanpi

Another part of animation

Actually we use two different projectors to complete this part. At first, we planned to use one projector to project the whole animation, later, we found the effect was not as good as  we wished. So we changed the original settlement.

One projector is on the first floor and the other one is on the ground floor.

After several times testing, we achieved the effects which we want.

tianshi

Overall, there are still a lot problems to be solved after the first testing.

Some problems are quite practical, such as equipment booking. Although we have already booked the necessary equipments ahead nearly one month. When we tested our project, we found that we still need 2 more projectors and more power supplies, because we need  power supplies to power our computers and projectors.

Besides, the place arrangement problems. Because originally we have been told to use the whole sculpture court to finish our dmsp project. But before the presentation day, our group have been told that we should to share the space with other groups on the presentation day. So we made a change to our original arrangement, such as we changed the interactive location and lying chairs location.

MEETING 12 (5 March)

MEETING 12 (5 March)

5th March, 12:30-15:30pm, ECA Sculpture Court

Members: Ye Tian (Terry) & Zheng Wang (Shana) & Bei Ye (Suzie) & Ke Niu (Hazel) & Yuan Lu (Lynn) & Ao Shen (Dora)

Topic: submission 1 tutorial and discussion submission 2

key words: feedback of submission 1 / requirements / submission 2

Overview: In this session, we have a discussion with our supervisor and she told me at this stage we should specify what we are aiming to achieve, being clear about the technical approach that we will pursue to achieve this project.

Feedback and Suggestions:

  1. Abstract paragraph are positively surreal, including some of the images. It is better for us to be more clear about our theme ‘recovery’.
  2. Acknowledge how the site and the sculptures in the site have triggered the conceptual approach and how the notion of recovery draws on the fact that most of the sculptures are incomplete, damaged or repaired
  3. Try to find ways to make a connection between the historical events surrounding the sculpture (the Nike of Samothrace sculpture) and contemporary humans living. Reflect on this and use it to your advantage
  4. Establish a connection between the underwater environment where we want to place and animate the Nike and the interactive wall projections.

need think problems:

  • The graphic/visual/aesthetic coherence
  • The movements going to relate to underwater environments
  • How do people need to perform (e.g. similar to swimming) or will you leave that open
  • How are you going to move people between the two opposed projection planes
  •  How is the interactive projection going to help people recover
  • So if water is key to recovery, how will this water flow through the bodies of those people who are present during the presentation of your work
  • What sort of flows affect motions under water
  • How are you going to move people between the two opposed projection planes
  • Producing more of the kaleidoscopic image (fit into the overall aesthetics of the project) and how would the image (kaleidoscopic) stand in relation to a sculpture or the whole site
  •  Having different sound files of water ( mix and project into different parts of the Sculpture Court.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

To make things work more efficient, we decided to divide us into smaller groups, each takes a specific responsibility on their own tasks (see the project plan).

  1. Ye tian is responsible for the sound part and try to make more different sound files of water
  2. Ao shen is in charge of the interaction part and find the connection between the two opposed projection planes
  3. Zheng wang, Yuan lu, Bei ye and Ke niu are responsible for the animation part.
  4. Zheng wang is in charge of the equipment booking and have already booked two more small projectors.

equipment projectors

To do list during next week:

  1. Testing  our animation using  Projectors – Toshiba TDP-ST20: 6645 that we have not borrowed before, so we need use it to do some testing
  2. Communicating with the administrator of the sculpture court to arrange the site-layout (we need use two white board to cover the doorways of the arches between Nike
  3. Design our dmsp project poster

Topic: Projection Mapping Test 4

This is our fourth time testing our project and we borrowed quite a lot equipment which we may use in our presentation day, including the biggest projector in music store, a LED light (which can show different colorful lights), a green panel, a small Sony voicer and a professional tripod.

Ye Tian  made a short testing video to map on the wall of the sculpture court and mediated the shapes and locations of the projection.

After testing for 3 hours, we had successfully mapped the animation onto the scene and this means we can also map other animations onto the scene. So in the next stage, we will try to make the scratch animation and then do the testing on the sculpture court again.

Members: Ye Tian (Terry) & Zheng Wang (Shana) & Bei Ye & Ke Niu (Hazel) & Yuan Lu (Lynn)& Ao Shen (Dora)

Topic: discussion the theme of project

Key words: setting / voice / music / emotion / media / digital technologies

Overview: In this session, we try to make an elementary decision on our project. After discussing with our supervisor, we put more emphasizes on the basic theme of our project rather than the technologies we would like to use in the future production.

Question:

How to combine the settings with the ECA sculpture court? The ECA sculpture court is too big for us to arrange.

Expect Accomplishment  Effect:

  1. When visitors enter into the ECA sculpture court, a beam will follow the visitors’ footprints but the visitor can not find where the beam come from.  Maybe can use the beam to show the motion trail of visitors. When people walk fast, the beam can also move fast, vice versa.

2. Using different light patterns and put them on the sculptures (maybe four or five sculptures on the different corners of the ECA sculpture court. The light patterns have various forms, like fiber structures, moss and so on. And visitors can use their hands to touch them, and the pattens will change their shapes.like this:

ravenkwok.com/perspective-tracking-in-triple-screens-cave/

Short plan:

  1. In order to achieve a seabed environment in the ECA sculpture court, we would like to record some special music/ lyric / voices for the project to create a better atmosphere.  Music like the sea wave in sunshine/ in a rainy day/ high tide / ebb tide. So we need to borrow a recording equipment from our school and then to record these material we want to use in this week.
  2. Taking photos to sculptures in the ECA sculpture court and according to the shapes of them to design the lighting shapes.

3. At the finally stage, we would like to make a video about visitors come to ECA sculpture court at evening time.

Equipments requirement:

  1. recorder
  2. LED light
  3. sensors
  4. 3D camera
  5. microphone
